Building Better Rice Businesses: Insights from the Business of Rice Milling Training in Ghana
About RMBT
The Rice Miller Business Training Program (RMBT) is a comprehensive training initiative under the GIZ-MOVE project, implemented by Sense Economics, aimed at transforming rice milling enterprises across Ghana. Designed to build the technical and business capacity of rice processors, RMBT supports sustainable agribusiness growth and strengthens the rice value chain nationwide.
The program is delivered as a five-course package, tailored to address the critical areas of rice milling entrepreneurship:
- The Business of Rice Milling
- Practical Marketing for Rice Mills
- Finance Essentials for Rice Mills
- Milling Operations
- Developing Profitable Farmer Services
To ensure regional inclusivity and relevance, Ghana is divided into two chapters/clusters under the RMBT framework:
- The Northern Chapter (serving millers from northern Ghana)
- The Southern Chapter (serving millers from southern Ghana)
Each chapter undergoes the five modules independently, allowing for context-specific insights, practical engagement, and peer learning within their local ecosystems.
The Business of Rice Milling (BRM): A Foundational Module
The Business of Rice Milling (BRM) is the first and one of the most impactful courses in the RMBT suite. It is designed to introduce rice millers to the core components of running a milling enterprise — beyond the technical aspects — with a focus on business strategy, profitability, and long-term sustainability.
Participants dive into topics such as:
- Rice milling processes and equipment handling
- Quality control and assurance
- Supply chain and sourcing strategies
- Financial planning and pricing models
- Legal compliance, record-keeping, and organizational structure
Delivered through real-life case studies, interactive discussions, and practical simulations, the BRM module enables millers to think of rice milling not just as a craft — but as a business enterprise.
Building Better Rice Businesses: Insights from the Field
In 2025, the BRM module was successfully delivered to both the Northern Chapter in Tamale (March 18–20) and the Southern Chapter in Sogakope (June 16– 18) with nearly 40 participants in total — including youth and women-led businesses — eager to sharpen their entrepreneurial skills and deepen their technical knowledge.
Turning Knowledge into Action
The impact of the training was immediate and deeply felt across both regions.
From the Northern Chapter:
Mr. Sugri Henry shared:
“I acquired essential skills, including technical knowledge of the milling process, pricing, marketing, and financial management. It also provided entrepreneurial guidance and networking opportunities that will help me improve efficiency and increase profitability.”
Mr. Frederick added:
“Previously, we only contacted farmers when we needed paddy, which affected the quality. But now, we understand the importance of building strong relationships with farmers for a steady supply of quality paddy. The 'Source, Make, and Sell' model also helped us better identify our customers and how to meet their needs.”
From the Southern Chapter:
Mr. Roland Jesse Prah, CEO of Pras Rice Milling, described the training as transformative:
“The rice milling training marked a significant turning point in our careers, equipping us with essential technical skills and broadening our understanding of the agricultural processing industry. It enhanced our knowledge of milling equipment, techniques, and quality control. We also gained insight into inventory management, marketing strategies, and the economics of rice processing.”
“Beyond the technical skills, the program strengthened our leadership, teamwork, and communication abilities — giving us the confidence to innovate and lead in our businesses.”
Madam Kate Achiaa, CEO of ANS Milling Centre, shared:
“Attending the Business of Rice Milling training transformed my view of rice milling from a technical task to a structured business. I gained practical skills in processing, quality control, and management. I also designed an organogram for my mill, defining roles such as General Manager, Operations Manager, and Quality Control Officer. This has improved coordination and accountability across our team.”
Empowering Change, One Skill at a Time
What sets the RMBT program apart is its holistic and deeply practical approach. By building both technical competence and business acumen, the program empowers rice millers to become not just processors, but entrepreneurs, managers, and change-makers in their communities.
The structured progression through the five modules — delivered separately in the Northern and Southern chapters — ensures that each participant is equipped with the full spectrum of skills required to succeed in today’s competitive rice industry.
Conclusion
The Business of Rice Milling module has set a strong foundation for participants in both Northern and Southern Ghana, sparking a shift in how millers view their roles and operations. With more training modules to follow, the RMBT program is poised to continue delivering impactful change — one session, one business, and one region at a time.
As these millers return to their communities, they do so with renewed purpose and practical tools to build businesses that not only thrive but also contribute to Ghana’s food security and rural development.
Stay tuned as we continue to share success stories from the trailblazers who are redefining rice milling in Ghana — one skill at a time
